DPU Design

Design focus: data movement, protocol processing, and hardware offload. This domain illustrates data-processing design challenges within AI infrastructure. Project scope and validation evidence will be detailed in its engineering story.

The common engineering approach

Different challenges.
The same design discipline.

Each chip class calls for different architectures and verification strategies. The common thread is Melten’s design-agent system: agents and silicon experts working through design, verification, and implementation.

01 / DEFINE & DESIGN

Requirements into
architecture.

Translate the design goal into architecture, hardware–software boundaries, and RTL—with human direction at key decisions.

N10 · Reusing proven foundations

Agents designed a new accelerator architecture while reusing the PCIe and DDR platform from an earlier Melten controller project.

02 / VERIFY & REFINE

Challenge the design.
Close the loop.

Cross-check implementations, diagnose failures, and iterate. Verification is part of the engineering process throughout.

PCIe · Closing the loop on hardware

When a byte-write fault blocked Host discovery, agents traced it on the board, repaired the logic, and added regression tests.

03 / IMPLEMENT & MEASURE

Results grounded
in evidence.

Connect claims to implementation and validation results. Each engineering story states what was built, measured, and verified.

NVMe · Removing a measured bottleneck

Board measurements exposed a bottleneck in the vendor bridge. Agents implemented Melten’s own PCIe AXI bridge and validated it with NVMe traffic.

A custom PCIe Gen4 x16 controller, in seven agent-days.

Melten’s agents built a custom PCIe Gen4 x16 interface on an FPGA whose built-in controller stops at Gen3. An encrypted NVMe drive demonstrates 28.4 GB/s reads and Linux boot, with reusable interface, encryption, and search IP for future customer designs.

A PCIe Gen4 switch, built in 17 days.

Directed by one designer, Melten’s design-agent system built a three-port PCIe Gen4 switch on an AMD Versal FPGA. Two off-the-shelf NVMe SSDs ran through it at 87–99% of their rated speeds.
